Check this one out guys - sexism in the gaming community.
TW: link is sexist as hell. If you don’t trigger, here’s a test: see how far down the page you can get without fucking it and clicking off the tab.
F: this is what you get for being a woman in the gaming community and speaking about feminism or sexism.
The sandwich jokes are nothing - you’ll be dismissed and laughed at, called a shrew and a Nazi, fat and anti-Semitic names, by one camp. By the other, they’ll get angry and report you for hate speech, yell at you for daring get involved wh the gaming community and type soul-crushingly harsh comments, call reverse-sexism (continuously) and blame you for all the hate and violent threats you’re getting. And they’ll genuinely think they’re in the right, and they’ll all pat each other on the back and upvote each other’s comments.
Sure, it’s YouTube, but don’t think elsewhere is nicer. The near-universal experience, I’m informed, of mentioning you’re a girl or speaking on mic on XBox Live, ranges from sandwich jokes to rape threats in roughly equal amounts. The only forums you can visit are the ones highly modded, or if you just pretend to be a boy and avoid the more obvious troll threads.
And people wonder why I get so mad at girls backing up this whole ‘gamer gurl’ piss-take. It’s just another way for guys to hate on you, and you’re helping them out, like a desperate idiot, for their approval. They don’t want you in their community. They don’t want to play shit with you, they don’t want to talk with you, they want to get with their fellow guys and laugh at you. No matter what you do. You don’t belong in their community.
I hear 42% of gamers are girls. Like fuck you’d know it. The ~57% cries hard enough to make it seem like 10%.
You wanna be unique, get fighting sexism. Get being not-a-dick. Jeezus, you don’t even have to do anything, just don’t act like this.
(also feel free to make hbu GET BACK IN THE KITCHEN jokes, I’m desensitised and they were likely inevitable, even on tumblr).
To cancel out some of that, here, have a prominent female gamer on YouTube. She does dutty run-throughs. If you have any more suggestions for me, especially for WoC gamers, let me know folks! I NEED DEM ALLMan, any guy who gives shit to a legit girl gamer needs to be banished from the gaming community.
I mean, let’s be realistic here. I’ve spent a fair bit of time playing multiplayer games, and I’ve noticed that it’s actually the guys who make the game less enjoyable. They shout obscenities at everyone, exploit certain aspects of the game (see: camping) and the majority I’ve seen aren’t very good with teamwork either. They just show off.
The girls I’ve played with (which were sadly few and far between) were great. If they got killed in a PvP game, they’d be pretty chill about it. I think they really understood the concept of respawning (IT’S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD MAN). They were also a lot more cautious in games like Left 4 Dead that require helping each other and not running off and being cool. Overall, they were a lot more relaxed and lighthearted. It’s no fun when the people you’re playing with are overreacting over a simple game, right?
I’m not stereotyping each gender saying one is better than the other, but it sucks how much of a bad rep girl gamers get. Real ones, not the ones who drool all over controllers ‘cause it’s ‘sexy’. I really wish I had more friends who were girls who just-so-happened to like video games as much as I do.
Vidya games aren’t just for dudes, and some guys should seriously just accept the fact that girls can do the same things they can, sometimes even better.
I never have this problem. I play l4d2 on live with the rooftop rats, they’re just there for the game and the banter between friends. But there are people who jump into our games and spill out all these obscenities, but not at me specifically. And when they are directed at me, it never has to do with my gender.
F: then you are one lucky girl xD In all honesty, I hope you don’t have to face it. I usually don’t get shit, IRL or in forums. I think it might be because I look and sound like a boy though.
Aisha Tyler just wrote a fantastic post about the sexism and racism in gamer culture.
